Holy Recession, Batman!

Yesterday, Rutgers announced a $10 increase per ticket per game for all Rutgers football games this fall.  Luckily, tickets were already fairly inexpensive so its not the biggest deal in the world, but its still not fun on an individual level.

This marks one of newly inducted A.D. Tim Pernetti's first moves, and while I am not happy about having to pay more per ticket personally (who is), this is a necessary move.  Raising prices by $10 per ticket per game gives RU an additional $2.8 million to work with for the stadium expansion.  This is vital for the future of Rutgers football.  As I stated a while back when PRT first got started, the stadium expansion needs to be one of the top priorities for the new A.D.  This move ensures that Pernetti is taking the stadium expansion project seriously and understands how vital it is.

This is happening all around college football, with several programs raising ticket prices in order to either combat the economic struggles in the country or to keep their athletic departments running full steam ahead.

With 12,000 season ticket holders in waiting, getting those fans into seats (which will happen with the new expansion) will provide millions in additional revenue, which will not only benefit the football team but the entire RU athletic department.  Win-win situation. Besides the loss in the ticket holders wallets, of course.

What do you think? Leave comments! Happy about the long term view of Rutgers football or angry that you'll have to spend an extra few $70-$80 bucks per ticket for the season?

My 2-cents

I’ve been listening to fatso (Mike Francesca) on WFAN make such a big deal out of the ticket price increase. Yes, obviously its unfortunate, but Rutgers needs to find a way to finance it’s new stadium expansion, plus the demand is there with over 12,000 people on the waiting list for season tickets.

The economy is fragile right now, but it’s not like Rutgers is the only team raising prices for th 2009 season. Michigan State, Colorado, Nebraska and I’m sure a slew of others will see their prices rise for the new season. True, some schools (Michigan, UConn) have slightly lowered their prices, but those prices were very expensive in the 1st place.

As for Francesca, I love his show, but anytime he talks about RU I have to turn the radio off. He has no knowledge of anything college football, and knows even less about Rutgers. I think he’s just jealous that his school (St. John’s) doesn’t have a football team.
