It's Tourney Time BABYYYYYYY! Day 1 Open Thread
It's Tourney Time Baby! Ya gottaaa loveee ittttttt!!!!
For anyone that loves the thrill of sport in any capacity, this is one of the best times of the year, hands down. The reason we love sports, especially college sports, is so evident on day 1 of the NCAA tourney that goosebumps can't help but pop out of your body every which way. The buzzer beaters, the upsets, the favorites dominating, and the final 4 all make the NCAA tournament one of the best and most followed in all of sports.
Who do you have picked to win it all? What's your favorite Tourney Time memory? What's going on in the games today? Leave it all in the open thread like Dick Vitale does on air in the first 10 minutes of his broadcasts. And here... we... go.

25 minutes and counting...
I’m nervous already! Hopefully no bracket busters today….

Gus Johnson
Anyone know if GJ is calling any of today’s game? I hope his head explodes.

1st wave
In the 1st wave of games today I’ve got:
LSU
Memphis
Texas A&M

LSU
LSU looks huge compared to the Butler guys (almost like Varsity vs. JV)
If Butler can’t knock down the three’s it could get ugly (right on cue, BU knocks one down to cut it to 13-6

They dominated the early part of that game.

One of my favorite parts....
The Live-Look-In
Hopefully we get a glimpse of what Memphis’ deal is at halftime.

Memphis
Actually a tight game at half, 34-31. I have them making the final 4. Not good so far for that.

Memphis
They just look flat, from what I heard in the short look-in, no FG’s in the last 7+ minutes for the Tigers. Plus they’ve had a lot of foul touble, which could hurt Big East teams later on today and tomorrow.
I expect them to pull away in the 2nd half, but if it’s close down the wire, let’s not forget that spectacular choke down the stretch of last year’s title game (though I must thank them for giving me the win in my bracket pool; Rock Chalk Jayhawk).

Breaking News...
UConn Coach Jim Calhoun will not coach in tonight’s game against Chattanooga. Calhoun complained of not feeling well and was taken to a Philadelphia hospital.
UConn still rolls tonight, and hopefully this isn’t anything serious. If so, UConn’s final 4 chances may be in trouble.
I like Calhoun, he’s a great interview, and never shys away from the tough quesitons. Hope he gets well soon.

It's raining 3's
And Butler’s cut it to 1 on the strength of it’s 3 point shooting, but they’ve also gotten some good looks on the inside, LSU’s positioning has been poor. LSU needs to stop the bleeding….and quick.

Upset Alert!
The concensus final four pick out of the West, Memphis (sorry UConn) is in a bit of trouble. Memphis down 3 to #15 seed Cal-State Northridge with less than 14 minutes left.
Not saying to crown a new cinderella, just something to keep an eye on.

El Matador!
CSN leads Memphis by 6 with 10 minutes left. Oh Boy!

Stupid Memphis!
What a waste of a final 4 pick.

Daylight
Memphis putting a bit of distance between themselves and CSN. Memphis up 6 with less than 3 minutes to play. Gotta be careful b/c of free throws though, miss a few one and ones and you’re right back in trouble.

We've got some juice!
Sometimes the early games on the 1st day can be snoozers, but not today. Memphis holds on for dear life, LSU hangs on to be a good Butler team, and A&M cruises to victory over BYU.
2nd wave starts shortly, here’s my picks:
Purdue (though I had UNI until today, hopefully it doesn’t backfire)
UNC
Maryland
UConn
hopefully this set of games will be just as good as the 1st.

Agree with all of those. Especially Purdue, I think they’re going to make a nice little run in their region.

Sweet Jesus
I don’t have anything insightful or relevant to add (at least right now), but who the hell put up that Dicky V picture? I think my heart stopped for a few seconds after seeing that thing.

Picture
He reminds me of Uncle Leo from Seinfeld in that picture, those eyebrows are pretty bushy.

Game Switch
Hopefully UConn can pull away and get a game switch for us to the Maryland-Cal game, looks like that might be the only one that’s going to be competitive.

Price for Three.....
X 3. Three straight 3’s for AJ Price, and UConn extends the lead to 13. As Kramer would say, “Stick a fork in me Jerry, I’m done”

UMD
I like maryland a lot in hoops. Had some friends from HS that went there (they won the tourney in my freshman year of college), it was a blast. I hope they do well this year, but i think as a 10 seed, the sweet 16 is the best they can hope for. Who knows.

NOVA
Not a fan of Nova, but I’ve got that lovin’ feelin.
Am 6 of 7 so far.
Got lucky on Maryland. Lost out on Butler.
I have Maryland topping Memphis before bowing out to Marquette.

Interesting
Interesting day so far….that memphis game was crazy, I have no idea why they were showing the butler/lsu game for so long down here in VA….i was going crazy whenever they flashed the memphis score…have them in the finals.
UMD looked good…
I got one loss so far – was hoping that Butler would pull through. how is everyone else looking?

Back for more
Back for the night game guys, and looks like we are in for a treat.
Every game within at least 3 now, maybe we’ll get a buzzer beater.
I’m impressed with this American team so far, they can stroke it.
I’m 8 for 8 thus far and have:
Nova
Zags
Texas
Clemson

Well aren’t you special?
This ’Nova game could screw over a lot of people.
by Kid Presentable on Mar 19, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And in the interest of full disclosure, I have Villanova, Gonzaga, Texas and Michigan. Luckily for me, I have ’Nova going to the Elite 8.
Twenty-two minutes into the game and Scottie Reynolds finally scores. Well done there.

Nova
A Nova loss is good for me, I got UCLA beating them anyway…..Nova down 6 right now, but I still don’t think they lose.
Stupid Michigan. I hate the Big Ten.
by ibleedscarlet on Mar 19, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
True, things are taking a wild turn for ‘Nova right now. It’s a good thing American gets to play this on a neutral site.
And for those looking for important Dicky V updates, this is good to know: http://www.theonion.com/content/news/dick_vitale_more_sexual_during?utm_source=a-section

stupid michigan
I really wanted clemson to pull that out. Terrible shot at the end, could’ve at least gotten something decent off.
