A Giant Mistake?
The Giants could have had former Rutgers WR at #29 in the NFL Draft, but chose to go instead with UNC WR Hakeem Nicks. The Giants had always graded Nicks highly and felt that he was a "good value" with the 29th overall pick. NJO.com's Mike Garofalo writes that the Giants refused to reach in the first round, hence the selection of Nicks:
Coach Tom Coughlin said the Giants had an opportunity to trade back, but they knew the Titans, who took Rutgers' Kenny Britt at No. 30, were looking for a receiver.
"To reach in the first round is just not the right thing for us to do," Reese said. "We won't compromise the strength of our team by reaching for guys too early in the first round. I think you make mistakes when you do that."
Without directly saying it, it seems that Coughlin believes that taking Britt with a round one draft pick would have been a reach, while Nicks must be a sure thing. The draft is always a crap shoot, and who knows how it will play out, but I have a feeling the G-hombres made a big mistake passing on Britt. At least Britt will not have to deal with the hometown distractions that he would face in NYC down in Tennessee.

You owe me $20 for that G-Hombres line. That said, I can’t explain (as an Eagles fan) how happy I am Britt won’t be starring every week for the Giants. They missed out.
