Former RU Defenders Finding Success on Jets
Brandon Renkart is earning his spot with the New York Jets....
After a quiet few days concerning RU athletics, the news is picking up.
NJO.com's Dave Hutchinson is reporting that 2 former Rutgers LB's are making a name for themselves on the New York Jets.
When Jets starting inside linebacker David Harris took a helmet in the mouth while standing on the sidelines -- without a helmet -- and colliding with punt returner Jim Leonhard as Leonhard ran full speed trying to field a punt, his replacement was a familair name to Rutgers fans.
Ex-Scarlet Knights linebacker Brandon Renkart worked with the first-team defense in place of Harris for the remainder of practice. Last season, Renkart had two separate stints on the Jets' practice squad and new coach Rex Ryan and his staff apparently see something in him.
Ryan also likes former Rutgers defensive end-turned-linebacker Jamaal Westerman. In fact, Renkart and Westerman are the Jets' two backup inside linebackers behind starters Bart Scott and Harris. ...
Good for Westerman and Renkart. Both were blue collar guys at Rutgers who always went about their business and put their team first. Neither was flashy, but they usually got the job done. Even though I root for another AFC East team, I hope that Renkart and Westerman have some big plays in store for next season.
